The Texas Lottery designs its games to be a fun form of entertainment. We
encourage players to "play responsibly." However, some players may have difficulty knowing when to
stop. For some, gambling of any kind can become a problem.
"Responsibility" is a core value of the Texas Lottery Commission. That includes
educating our players about important game-related issues and encouraging them to play responsibly.
Following are some resources we have identified to help with problem gambling. If you or someone
you know has a compulsive gambling problem, we encourage you to seek help.
Resources
The
Texas Department of
State Health Services (DSHS) Substance Abuse Services, formerly the
Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug
Abuse (TCADA), attempts to ensure that Texans have access to effective and efficient
substance abuse and problem gambling services. The DSHS Web site provides information
about and links to programs, resources, and hotlines.
- Agency Main Number: (800) 832-9623.
The North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries (NASPL)
provides a
Problem Gambling FAQ section on its Web site that addresses questions such as
what constitutes problem gambling, how to tell if someone is a problem gambler, and what causes
problem gambling. The site also provides links to a variety of resources on the
Links to Problem Gambling Resources page.
- U.S. Gambling Hotline: (800) 522-4700.
The
National Center for Responsible Gambling (NCRG)
funds research to identify the risk factors for gambling disorders and determine methods not only
for treating the disorders but for preventing them. The Web site also gives information about NCRG
education programs, including conferences, youth initiatives, video resources and
publications.
- Telephone: (202) 552-2689.
Gamblers Anonymous operates a Web site
that includes an FAQ page, recovery program information, and a list of 20 questions to ask to find
out if a person or someone the person knows may have a compulsive gambling problem.
- Telephone: (213) 386-8789.
Gam-Anon.org provides questionnaires designed
to help answer questions such as whether a person grew up with a compulsive gambler, and whether a

of Gam-Anon meetings in different cities throughout the country.
- Telephone: (718) 352-1671.
